I decided to ask my sponsors to sponsor by the mile and to give me a motivational song for their mile and a reason why they chose that song. I then downloaded all songs to my Splashgear MP3 waterproof player and onto a portable player. Between each mile my swim buddy, (my son Gary), would say to me “Mum, you are now swimming mile 18 (or whatever it was), for Gray. He has given you When the Going Gets tough, the Tough Get going because he thinks this is when you are really gonna have to get tough. etc. etc. I had songs like, We are the Champions, What have you done today to make you feel proud, I will survive – all to motivate me. Mile 24 for was my late dad and I chose Simply the Best by Tina Turner. By saving the best song and person to last, I knew I had to reach mile 24. It really helped me focus because I just thought of that person and the reason that they had given me to swim their mile for them and then I listened to their song whilst swimming.
My other most valuable bit of advice is to have a swim-buddy that wants you to achieve this challenge as much as you do. My son played a huge part in my achieving the challenge. He said to me before each mile, “Mum, what do you want me to have ready for you at the end of this mile”. I would say, hot chocolate, banana, pain-killers! and then when I came back to my tent, everything was lined up for me. He had also put a fresh hot-water bottle in my sleeping bag, hand warmers inside my gloves and socks and rotated my towels so I always had a dry one handy. It saved me so much valuable time. And then while I was having my rest, he would motivate me with the next song and reason why I had to get through it.
Well – it certainly worked for me.
